The ongoing adoption of cloud computing by communications service providers (CSPs) continues to fundamentally reshape their business models and technology strategies on several levels. One such area that is garnering significant attention is the impact of the cloud on security services. This is because security services and the vital tools they encompass can be empowered through the adoption of a carrier cloud model. This, in turn, better positions CSPs to meet the demands of their customers, including those in the small to medium-size business (SMB) market segment. In January 2016, the Federal Risk and Authorization Management Program released a draft of its high-impact baseline for moving federal data to the cloud. Not long after, Amazon Web Services (AWS) accepted an offer to pilot the new security threshold. AWS worked with FedRAMP to develop a set of standards under which highly sensitive government data could securely migrate into cloud environments. If ever you doubted that cloud computing was the new frontier for federal data and software management, look around. Over 2,300 government agencies worldwide have already migrated to the AWS Cloud. And in the U.S., this will only increase with the release of FedRAMPs high baseline standards. ESG recently conducted a quantitative research study to assess companies IT Transformation maturity. ESG found that operating a modern server environment, defined as an environment in which operations tasks are more automated than manual, led to a perception of cost parity with the public cloud. Nearly half felt their cost of compute was highly competitive with CSPs and another 48% felt it was generally comparable.
