User access-related business risk comprises a broad array of potentially damaging events that may be caused or made possible by inadequate governance of access to an enterprise’s information assets. Such events range from relatively minor policy and compliance violations to disastrous business losses.  The stakes involved in access-related risk have risen dramatically in recent years as organizations have become thoroughly operationalized by technology.

Until recently, businesses that were seeking information about their customers, products, or applications, in real time, were challenged to do so. Streaming data, such as website clickstreams, application logs, and IoT device telemetry, could be ingested but not analyzed in real time for any kind of immediate action. For years, analytics were understood to be a snapshot of the past, but never a window into the present. Reports could show us yesterdays sales figures, but not what customers are buying right now. Then, along came the cloud. With the emergence of cloud computing, and new technologies leveraging its inherent scalability and agility, streaming data can now be processed in memory, and more significantly, analyzed as it arrives, in real time. Millions to hundreds of millions of events (such as video streams or application alerts) can be collected and analyzed per hour to deliver insights that can be acted upon in an instant. From financial services to manufacturing, this rev

Safeguarding your data is more important than ever. In todays data-driven business landscape, companies are using their data to innovate, inform product improvements, and personalize services for their customers. The sheer volume of data collected for these purposes keeps growing, but the solutions available to organizations for processing and analyzing it become more efficient and intuitive every day. Reaching the right customers at the right time with the right offers has never been easier. With this newfound agility, however, comes new opportunities for vulnerability. With so much riding on the integrity of your data and the services that make it secure and available, its crucial to have a plan in place for unexpected events that can wipe out your physical IT environment or otherwise compromise data access. The potential for natural disasters, malicious software attacks, and other unforeseen events necessitates that companies implement a robust disaster recovery (DR) strategy to

Its the moment every IT department dreads: A data loss event takes your business offline and the countdown clock begins. Despite spending countless hours safeguarding against and preparing for this moment, the impact of downtime is immediate and all-consuming. While IT pros cant always avoid data loss events, they can prepare for them to ensure minimal downtime. To better understand the IT experience during a data disaster, EVault commissioned Spiceworks Voice of IT to survey IT pros regarding disaster recovery practices and perceptions. All survey respondents were based in the U.S. and have influence over backup/disaster recovery purchase decisions. This e-book will explore the impact of downtime and data loss on IT departments for small and midsize businesses.

Businesses need to plan for unforeseen events that can disrupt productivity, impair the customer experience, and possibly even threaten a businesss existence. A disruption every business needs to plan for is any event that destroys valuable data, inhibits access to data, or causes downtime of core applications. Consider the staggering amount of information your company stores electronically. What if an unforeseen event destroyed all financial records, client contacts, and application data? You wouldnt be able to send customers accurate invoices. Your marketing efforts might be undermined. You would lack key metrics for measuring quality, profitability, and more. The losses could be staggering. In every aspect of life, its smart to plan for unexpected events. Thats especially true for two plans every business must have: a disaster recovery plan and a business continuity plan.

Our industry has made numerous technological advances designed to protect homeowners, businesses and electrical workers. That makes every fatal electrocution in the home all the more distressing. Between 2010 and 2013, the U.S. saw an estimated average of 48 electrocution fatalities associated with consumer products per year, with large and small electric appliances chief among them1. Tragedies like these can be avoided, especially when the ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) technologies needed to prevent dangerous events are readily available. As the principle NEMA representative at the National Electrical Code (NEC) Code-Making Panel Two, I saw public input asking for increased GFCI protection for the home during the 2017 code cycle. The code panel expanded the GFCI requirement for facilities other than dwelling units as part of section NEC 210.8(B). However, residential standards improvements were sidelined.

Fortinets 2018 Security Implications of Digital Transformation Survey looks at the state of cybersecurity in organizations around the world from the lens of digital transformation (DX). Three hundred responses from CISOs and CSOs at large organizations helped us identify several current trends: n Digital transformation is the most impactful IT trend on businesses today, with 92% responding that it has a large impact today. n Security is by far the biggest challenge to DX efforts, with 85% of respondents saying it has a large impact. n The typical organization saw four attacks that resulted in data loss, outages, or compliance events over two years. n Many companies have automated some of their security procedures, but they are even further behind with other security best practices. n Big chunks of infrastructure remain vulnerable in the typical organization, with 25% of the infrastructure not adequately protected at the typical organization. Looking more deeply into the data, we ident

Over the past few years, business leaders have been the primary drivers of technology change, including making decisions to adopt new applications in the cloud, mandate a cloud-first strategy, offer new capabilities with an API-first strategy, and provide new applications to end users on mobile first. There are significant benefits to these cloud decisions because they decrease time to value, lower costs, and make it easier for organizations to experiment and innovate. But there are consequences as well, chiefly in the complexity of learning how to integrate applications and exchange data across a decentralized architecture that is largely driven by autonomous development decisions. This IDC White Paper answers the following questions about the need for hybrid integration: How are changes in business strategy and technology adoption requiring changes in how organizations approach integration? What are the major events that trigger integration adaptation? How are the roles involve

No business is immune to the threat of IT downtime caused by natural and manmade disasters. Businesses are overwhelmed with data; its a blessing and a curse. A curse because it can overwhelm traditional approaches to storing and processing it. A blessing because the data promises business insight that never existed earlier. The industry has spawned a new term, big data, to describe it. Now, IT itself is overwhelmed with its own big data. In the press to roll out new services and technologiesmobility, cloud, virtualizationapplications, networks, and physical and virtual servers grow in a sprawl. With them comes an unprecedented volume of data such as logs, events, and flows. It takes too much time and resources to sift through it, so most of it lies unexplored and unexploited. Yet like business data, it contains insight that can help us solve problems, make decisions, and plan for the future.
