Customer service has an opportunity to be a much more strategic weapon for businesses that understand its power. To do this means moving away from what has traditionally been viewed as a back-end operation and cost center to what is now being viewed as a brand-focused profit center. The primary driver of this sea change is engaged and empowered consumers, who want to get the answers to their questions anytime, anywhere, on any device they choose.

If you are not feeling some pain, you are not driving fast enough, says Red Hat CTO, Global Service Provider, Ian Hood. The race to 5G is definitely on, and the use cases are clear. You can talk about multi edge compute capacity and other technical issues, but the fundamental thing is to have a common platform to deliver future services. We need to get to the point where IoT Everywhere, virtualized video and all the applications that come from new 5G services are delivered seamlessly. Even blockchain has a clear future within the telco environment where the world of eSIMs, secure roaming charges and identity management can alls be based on blockchain technology.

A major telecoms client was struggling with time to market. Keen to launch a new youth brand, it had a number of innovative value-added digital services it wanted to offer; but it was taking a long time to implement them. Launching a new brand meant a 12-15 month cycle, which was unacceptable. The reason was that, whenever anyone wanted to launch a new product or feature, they had to work on both the back-end and the front-end and then integrate it with the front end applications to make it work. This was so time-consuming and difficult that we were appointed to introduce a micro services layer in between, which would shorten development timescales.

Commoditization is a serious threat to the telecommunications industry. Most CSPs offer similar services at rates designed to win what has become a price war. As a result, many face decreasing margins and difficulty sustaining differentiation based on prices or products alone. On top of commoditization, CSPs also face competition from OTT providers and an increasingly knowledgeable and demanding customer base. With access to growing amounts of data from an ever-increasing number of sources and devices, todays empowered, savvy consumers know what they want and expect to get it.
