Many security-minded organizations utilize code signing to provide an additional layer of security and authenticity for their software and files. Code signing is carried out using a type of digital certificate known as a code-signing certificate. The process of code signing validates the authenticity of legitimate software by confirming that an application is from the organization who signed it. While code-signing certificates can offer more security, they can also live an unintended secret life providing cover for attack groups, such as the Suckfly APT group. In late 2015, Symantec identified suspicious activity involving a hacking tool used in a malicious way against one of our customers. Normally, this is considered a low-level alert, however, the hacktool had an unusual characteristic not typically seen with this type of file; it was signed with a valid code-signing certificate. Download this whitepaper to find out more about how you can protect your business from such threats.

No one in todays highly connected world is exempt from security threats like phishing, ransomware, or denial-of-service (DoS) attacks. Certainly not Google. Google operates seven services with more than one billion active users each (including Google Search, YouTube, Maps, and Gmail). We see every type of attack, bad software, and bad actorsmultiple times a dayand were proud of what our people, processes, and technology do to stop them. Google has published more than 160 academic research papers on computer security, privacy, and abuse prevention and has privately warned other software companies of weaknesses discovered in their systems. Within Google, we enforce a zero-trust security model, which monitors every device on the internal network.

A significant paradigm shift occurred in the last few years. Much like other technological shifts of the last decade when cloud computing changed the way we do business, agile changed the way we develop software and Amazon changed the way we shop Zero Trust presents us with a new paradigm in how we secure our organizations, our data and our employees. While difficult to identify the precise tipping point, one thing is certain: what were once extraordinarily high-profile, damaging breaches are no longer extraordinary. In just the last 18 months, Yahoo, Accenture, HBO, Verizon, Uber, Equifax, Deloitte, the U.S. SEC, the RNC, the DNC, the OPM, HP, Oracle and a profusion of attacks aimed at the SMB market have all proven that every organization public or private is susceptible. The epiphany behind the paradigm shift is clear: Widely-accepted security approaches based on bolstering a trusted network do not work. And they never will. Especially when businesses are dealing with skill

The DevOps model drives digital transformation and the rapid delivery of new software products and services. However, this process largely takes place outside the purview of information security (InfoSec), often without their involvement. As a result, security teams struggle to keep pace. This whitepaper explores the intersection of DevOps and InfoSec, offering three reasons why security organizations will benefit by combining these two practices.

Today, when you make decisions about information technology (IT) security priorities, you must often strike a careful balance between business risk, impact, and likelihood of incidents, and the costs of prevention or cleanup. Historically, the most well-understood variable in this equation was the methods that hackers used to disrupt or invade the system.

Countless studies and analyst recommendations suggest the value of improving security during the software development life cycle rather than trying to address vulnerabilities in software discovered after widespread adoption and deployment. The justification is clear. For software vendors, costs are incurred both directly and indirectly from security flaws found in their products. Reassigning development resources to create and distribute patches can often cost software vendors millions of dollars, while successful exploits of a single vulnerability have in some cases caused billions of dollars in losses to businesses worldwide. Vendors blamed for vulnerabilities in their product's source code face losses in credibility, brand image, and competitive advantage.

Security is a looming issue for businesses. The threat landscape is increasing, and attacks are becoming more sophisticated. Emerging technologies like IoT, mobility, and hybrid IT environments now open new business opportunity, but they also introduce new risk. Protecting servers at the software level is no longer enough. Businesses need to reach down into the physical system level to stay ahead of threats. With todays increasing regulatory landscape, compliance is more critical for both increasing security and reducing the cost of compliance failures. With these pieces being so critical, it is important to bring new levels of hardware protection and drive security all the way down to the supply chain level. Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) has a strategy to deliver this through its unique server firmware protection, detection, and recovery capabilities, as well as its HPE Security Assurance.

Theres no denying that todays workforce is mobile. Inspired by the ease and simplicity of theirown personal devices, todays workforce relies on a variety of tools to accomplish their businesstasks desktops, smart phones, tablets, laptops or other connected devices each with varyingoperating systems. The specific tasks they need to accomplish? That depends on the person. But its safe to say remotely logging in and out of legacy, desktop, mobile, software as-a-service (SaaS) and cloud applications is a given. And the devices on which they work? They could be owned by the enterprise or the end user, with varying levels of company oversight, security and management. The result? An overabundance of flexibility that leads to fundamental IT challenges of security and manageability.

Oracle has just announced a new microprocessor, and the servers and engineered system that are powered by it. The SPARC M8 processor fits in the palm of your hand, but it contains the result of years of co-engineering of hardware and software together to run enterprise applications with unprecedented speed and security. The SPARC M8 chip contains 32 of todays most powerful cores for running Oracle Database and Java applications. Benchmarking data shows that the performance of these cores reaches twice the performance of Intels x86 cores. This is the result of exhaustive work on designing smart execution units and threading architecture, and on balancing metrics such as core count, memory and IO bandwidth. It also required millions of hours in testing chip design and operating system software on real workloads for database and Java. Having faster cores means increasing application capability while keeping the core count and software investment under control. In other words, a boost

The Software in Silicon design of the SPARC M7 processor, and the recently announced SPARC S7 processor, implement memory access validation directly into the processor so that you can protect application data that resides in memory. It also includes on-chip Data Analytics Accelerator (DAX) engines that are specifically designed to accelerate analytic functions. The DAX engines make in-memory databases and applications run much faster, plus they significantly increase usable memory capacity by allowing compressed databases to be stored in memory without a performance penalty. The following Software in Silicon technologies are implemented in the SPARC S7 and M7 processors: Note: Security in Silicon encompasses both Silicon Secured Memory and cryptographic instruction acceleration, whereas SQL in Silicon includes In-Memory Query Acceleration and In-Line Decompression. Silicon Secured Memory is the first-ever end-to-end implementation of memory-access validation done in hardware. It

This whitepaper explores the new SPARC S7 server features and then compares this offering to a similar x86 offering. The key characteristics of the SPARC S7 to be highlighted are: ? Designed for scale-out and cloud infrastructures ? SPARC S7 processor with greater core performance than the latest Intel Xeon E5 processor ? Software in Silicon which offers hardware-based features such as data acceleration and security The SPARC S7 is then compared to a similar x86 solution from three different perspectives, namely performance, risk and cost. Performance matters as business markets are driving IT to provide an environment that: ? Continuously provides real-time results. ? Processes more complex workload stacks. ? Optimizes usage of per-core software licenses. Risk matters today and into the foreseeable future, as challenges to secure systems and data are becoming more frequent and invasive from within and from outside.
