Virtually every organization understands that its successful operation depends on the continuous availability of its applications. Most companies rely on internal applications-ranging from enterprise resource planning to payroll systems-to keep the wheels of their enterprise turning. They also depend on external-facing applications for everything from selling products to their customers to automating the supply chain with suppliers and partners. The failure of any of these mission-critical applications could be catastrophic to a business.

The software as a service (SaaS) model of application delivery, more commonly known as cloud deployment, in which software features are accessed through a Web browser, is an excellent way for manufacturing companies to get the bene?ts of enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems without the need to build additional IT infrastructure. ERP functionality delivered from the cloud avoids the complexity and costs that often accompany on premisess ERP implementations, and typically provides a much more favorable total cost of ownership, compared to legacy on premisess deployment. Companies subscribe to the software features that they need and can add new ones as business requirements change, without buying additional servers or storage to support new functionality. The ERP features are the same as for an on premises ERP system, except that it is hosted and maintained on the Cloud providers infrastructure.

By now, much has been written about the advantages server virtualization brings to an enterprise. In the June 2013 survey, 63% of all companies and 100% of large enterprises reported having a server virtualization program. However, when you segment the virtualization rates, you find a trend that indicates that large enterprises in particular are not gaining all of the advantages that server virtualization has to offer. What is more difficult and remains a challenge, particularly for large enterprises, is virtualizing Tier 1 applications. These are large, mission-critical enterprise applications such as email, customer relationship management (CRM), or enterprise resource planning (ERP). These applications tend to be very large, consume the entire capacity of a current generation server, and require high application uptimes. As shown in Figure 1, the virtualization rates for these applications are far lower than Tier 2 apps. In this eBook, youll learn how the NEC enterprise server provides a platform that now gives customers the right platform to virtualize their Tier 1 apps.

Ultimately, it all adds up to one thing: lack of control. You need more control over the amount of time it takes to put the budget together, more control over how long it takes to make a change in the budget whenever it's needed, more control over the accuracy of the data, and more control over who can access that data.
