To mine raw data and extract crucial insights, business decision‐makers need fast and comprehensive access to all the information stored across their enterprise, regardless of its format or location. Furthermore, that data must be organized, analyzed and visualized in ways that permit easy interpretation of market opportunities growth, shifts and trends and the business‐process changes required to address them. Gaining a true perspective on an organization’s customer base, market area or potential expansion can be a challenging task, because companies use so many relational databases, data warehouse technologies, mapping systems and ad hoc data repositories to gather and house information for a wide variety of specialized purposes.

Knowledge and strategic relationships fuel many organizations in todays rapidly changing, global economy. As such, organizations need to leverage the individualsand their networksthat possess the most relevant knowledge, whether they are current employees or are only loosely connected to the organization. To do this, organizations should create and leverage peer collaboration networks that enable them to identify and connect with individuals who have the unique skills, knowledge, and capabilities these organizations need. Bersins Research, Why Reputations and Networks Matter in the Open Talent Economy, indicates that this approach works in driving valueorganizations that have effectively used internal reputation networks and profile databases have been able to increase key metrics such as employees time to productivity and innovation levels.

Traditional databases and data warehouses are evolving to capture new data types and spread their capabilities in a hybrid cloud architecture, allowing business users to get the same results regardless of where the data resides. The details of the underlying infrastructure become invisible. Self-managing data lakes automate the provisioning, reliability, performance and cost, enabling data access and experimentation.

At its Build conference in May, Microsoft took the wraps off Cosmos DB, the new incarnation of its existing cloud-based Azure DocumentDB NoSQL database. With a nod to the dramatic, Microsoft terms Cosmos DB as its biggest database bet since SQL Server; it is positioning it as its flagship cloud database, suited for use cases ranging from security and fraud detection, to IoT (consumer and industrial), personalization, e-commerce, gaming, social networks, chats, messaging, bots, oil and gas recovery and refining, and smart utility grids. Cosmos DB is a good example of how cloud platform providers are rethinking databases for scalable, elastic environments and commodity infrastructure. The platform that is most comparable is Google Cloud Spanner, but each of these databases is engineered for different purposes: Cosmos DB as a globally distributed operational database and Spanner as a globally distributed SQL-supporting OLTP database. The highlights of Cosmos DB include its flexibility in

The Vertica Analytic Database is the only database built from scratch to handle today's heavy business intelligence workloads. In customer benchmarks, Vertica has been shown to manage terabytes of data running on extraordinarily low-cost hardware and answers queries 50 to 200 times faster than competing row-oriented databases and specialized analytic hardware. This document summarizes the key aspects of Vertica's technology that enable such dramatic performance benefits, and compares the design of Vertica to other popular relational systems.

In an environment where business and government databases store ever-increasing amounts of sensitive and confidential data; and where a growing number of employees need to access that data remotely, password security alone is insufficient to ensure user authentication. Two-factor authentication requires two measures for users to verify their identities and access data.

The nature of the financial services industry places a myriad of international compliance requirements on a company's IT team, as well as an expectation by its customers to deliver the high test levels of performance and reliability. To survive and thrive, businesses in the industry must not only keep pace with customer demand but gain competitive advantage. Those demands mean the IT team must be at the forefront of adopting emerging technologies. This is certainly true for Orangefield Columbus, who recently experienced significant growth in its multiple databases which led to the serious performance degradation of its existing storage system. By focusing on a proactive data management storage array, Orangefield was able to eliminate resource contention. Databases and information management systems let you describe, categorize, store, modify and analyze data. What if you could do the same with decisions? Your systems could learn from previous choices and manipulate them to fit new parameters to intelligently mold future decisions made by executives, everyday business users and even your systems to optimize outcomes. Read this a specially selected excerpt from James Taylor's new book, "Decision Management Systems: A Practical Guide to Using Business Rules and Predictive Analytics" to discover the guiding principles for building decision management systems that can help your organization differentiate itself from the competition at virtually every decision point.

Relational database management systems (RDBMSs) are systems of software that manage databases as structured sets of tables containing rows and columns with references to one another through key values. They include the ability to optimize storage, process transactions, perform queries, and preserve the integrity of data structures. When used with applications, they provide the beating heart of the collection of business functions supported by those applications. They vary considerably in terms of the factors that impact the total cost of running a database application, yet users seldom perform a disciplined procedure to calculate such costs. Most users choose instead to remain with a single vendor's RDBMS and never visit the question of ongoing hardware, software, and staffing fees.

An Intelligent Roadmap for Capacity Planning Many organizations apply overly simplistic principles to determine requirements for compute capacity in their virtualized data centers. These principles are based on a resource allocation model which takes the total amount of memory and CPU allocated to all virtual machines in a compute cluster, and assumes a defined level of over provisioning (e.g. 2:1, 4:1, 8:1, 12:1) in order to calculate the requirement for physical resources. Often managed in spreadsheets or simple databases, and augmented by simple alert-based monitoring tools, the resource allocation model does not account for actual resource consumption driven by each application workload running in the operational environment, and inherently corrodes the level of efficiency that can be driven from the underlying infrastructure.

Analyst Wayne Kernochan of Infostructure Associates documents the analytics speed-up capability of DB2 with BLU Acceleration and explains how DB2 BLU compares with competitors. His conclusion after reviewing test results? Not surprisingly, the results verified a consistent, roughly order-of-magnitude speedup using BLU Acceleration, against DB2 pre-BLU and against some obvious competitors. What is his advice to readers about DB2 BLU? If your upcoming database needs analytics/BI/reporting-related, why would you not use BLU Acceleration for them? In other words, what are you waiting for?

Spreadsheets have become one of the most prevalent software applications used by businesses. They are used for everything from simple calculations to impromptu databases. While inherently useful, spreadsheets are frequently used for tasks in which they are ill-suited. In fact, too many companies overlook the importance of accurate fixed asset tracking and rely on spreadsheets to track value, depreciation, and tax calculations. Unwittingly, this results in the direct loss of money and time.
