No matter the size of the business, technology plays a critical role in its financial success. At the most basic level, companies have to deal with desktop and laptop computers for all their employees, e-mail, access to the Internet, Blackberries, and other kinds of on-site and remote devices. Add networking issues like viruses, spam and bandwidth utilization, and suddenly, this effort becomes a major challenge to anyone operating a small or mid-sized business (SMBs) with limited resources and a limited budget.

This document describes how Likewise and Microsoft Active Directory can foster compliance with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard, a set of requirements for businesses that process payment card information. Developed by Visa, American Express, Discover Financial Services, and other members of the PCI Security Standards Council, the standard sets forth policies, procedures, and practices to protect customer account data. The standard includes specific requirements for strictly controlling access to customer data, authenticating business users, monitoring access, maintaining a secure network, and auditing system resources. Likewise integrates Linux, Unix, and Mac OS X workstations and servers into Active Directory, providing the basis to assign each user a unique ID for authentication, authorization, monitoring, and tracking. Likewise also provides group policies for non-Windows computers so that their security settings and other configurations can be centrally managed in the same way as Windows computers.

Then the paper discusses how Likewise Enterprise can help your company make the shift to continuous compliance for identity and access management in a mixed network. Likewise joins Linux, Unix, and Mac OS X computers to Active Directory, providing the basis to assign each user a unique ID for authentication, authorization, and monitoring. Likewise also includes group policies for non-Windows computers so that you can centrally manage their security settings in the same way as Windows computers.

The Internet of Things may be a hot topic in the industry but its not a new concept. In the early 2000s, Kevin Ashton was laying the groundwork for what would become the Internet of Things (IoT) at MITs AutoID lab. Ashton was one of the pioneers who conceived this notion as he searched for ways that Proctor & Gamble could improve its business by linking RFID information to the Internet. The concept was simple but powerful. If all objects in daily life were equipped with identifiers and wireless connectivity, these objects could be communicate with each other and be managed by computers.

Communities rely on their local policemen and policewomen to keep them safe, protect their property and preserve the peace. But few citizens really understand the dangers that officers face every day, especially patrolling and answering calls in vehicles or on foot. While their training provides them with tactics and procedures, situations and individuals are unpredictable. Devices such as computers and tablets make these tactics possible. From accidents to health emergencies, domestic violence to theft and assaults, police must perform in high-stress, volatile environments and make the right decisions in seconds. And in todays digital world, everything they do may be recorded and posted online. Intel inside, powerful productivity outside.

As schools look to blended learning as a solution to personalize and positively impact student achievement, the need to train and support teachers has become blatantly clear. Thus, districts and schools have allocated scarce resources to the process of onboarding and supporting teachers as new devices such as computers or tables are introduced. However, school leaders and teachers often fail to recognize the need to similarly onboard and support students into new digital environments, instead trusting the inherent technological competencies of the digital native student.

The hallmark of the Digital Age is change constant, rapid, and often disruptive. The computer itself has changed from mainframe to minicomputers, personal desktops to laptops, handheld devices to mobile computers or tablets. We now have tiny embedded computers in cars, in washing machines and even in cats and dogs. How we live our lives has changed. Virtually every activity humans engage in, is impacted by computers and thats constantly changing, too. No surprise then, that K-12 education was also impacted by the constant transformation of computers.
