In today’s application economy, interaction between a business and its customers, partners and employees is increasingly through apps. And omni-channel access to these applications—from anywhere at any time—is dependent on APIs. These APIs provide an interface for developers to code against, and must be robust enough to support ever-growing demand. As a result, APIs are perhaps the most critical technology in digital business design today. APIs sit between your application clients —apps, websites and devices—and application backends. By leveraging APIs, you can securely stretch the boundaries of your enterprise by tapping into a broad array of digital businesses, digital customers and digital devices. But just as important as the API, is the application backend itself. Behind the API, the data access layer and application logic layer are doing the heavy lifting—implementing business rules, maintaining data consistency and managing interactions with various data sources. These three com

When products are bought off the shelf, they are easy to price. But what happens when every product has to be configured to create an entirely bespoke solution? Our client manufactured sophisticated industrial machinery that needed to be configured to each customer, which made each quote a complex task. Sales teams had to somehow translate the customers' complex requirements into a solution; selecting the right products, features, and components; and ensuring that the end result would be not only compatible but also deliverable. Also, the quote frequently had to include various offer variations and price points. The conversation about pricing could only begin once all of this had been discussed, agreed upon, and approved.

When one of our client's most strategic web applications was hacked, it was something of a wake-up call. Application security is surprisingly often an afterthought, and serious investment is only sometimes made when security breaches are discovered. Effectively, companies try to close the stable door after the horse has bolted. However, preventive security maintenance of apps is far more cost-effective and less damaging than reactive security. Our client therefore asked us to put in place an app security testing program early in the development life cycle to reduce the chances of similar breaches in the future.

As with many large, established banks, our client's infrastructure was centered on a core banking system that was dependent on packaged systems and highly complex backends. Each time a new product was launched or changed, the back-end had to be reintegrated with the customer-facing channel. This was time-consuming and the bank wanted to speed up their time to market, in order to respond to the customer demand for product innovation. They therefore, needed to move from a predominately peer-to-peer (P2P) oriented multi protocol architecture to an API-Based integration platform, and set out to find a partner by issuing a request for proposal (RFP). We were keen to respond, but wanted to present a proposal with a difference.

The world of retail banking has changed enormously in the last decade. Our client, one of the largest banks in the world, with over 50 million customers, has been at the heart of this movement. In the early days, we helped them to be one of the first banks to offer internet banking servers. Now, as digital natives enter the banking stream and demand seamless banking experiences, we are helping our client to rethink customer experiences at the convergence of physical and digital realms.

The digital revolution has left no part of business untouched. The traditional world of CFO's is evolving fast - not only because technology enables them to perform their duties more effectively, but also because the next generation of CFOs are steadily making their way into the boardroom. And they are going to drive change even faster. This was an issue that was high on the agenda for our client, one of the world's largest multinational conglomerates. They could see that CEO's of the group's businesses were relying increasingly on the financial insight of their CFOs to help shape business direction strategy. CFOs, therefore, need to ensure that they are equipped with technology and data to fulfill this new and demanding role.

Customers buy products in return for money. But at the heart of our client's vision was another exchange, which was perhaps even more fundamental. Customers would give their time and attention - and in return they wanted an experience that meets their needs, what is often referred to as 'return on engagement' But how can you offer a suitable experience when you don't know enough about the customer? Our client had gathered data, but it was siloed - and there was a big disconnect between the physical and digital operations of the business. The two were not integrated, making it difficult to build a picture of the customers' widely varying needs. This was also a global business with different approaches for different markets, leading to further inefficiencies and silos. It was time to consolidate, standardize, and to really get to know the customer.

Our client was a large financial institution with millions of customers using a wide range of products. So when customers called the contact center, they could have any query out of a possibility set of 68 categories. They would want investment advice, or ask about their account. Or they would simply want to reset their PIN. The trouble was that the large range of support offered at the contact center meant long and complex phone calls, as customers often found their way through the interactive voice response (VR) system to the wrong agent. They had to be re-routed-often several times- which gave our clients two problems.

For our client, developing multiple digital assets and campaigns across geographies to mirror their offline strategy was a complex task. The lack of an agile digital platform further aggravated their problem. As a large pharmaceutical company with operations in virtually every country in the world, and a portfolio of well-known brands, our client had to develop and maintain several websites and digital assets to support regional launches and campaigns. However, each one was treated as a separate project which raised several challenges.

Our client offered electronic money transfer services. For years they had provided the digital links and the networks of agents that enabled people to send money quickly and easily around the world. But digital technology introduced a number of challenges to their business. Not only were pure digital payment companies threatening the agent-based model, but their business models had lower operating costs than a network of physical agents. Also, other technologies such as virtual money transfer via blockchain were being more widely adopted. In addition, industry mergers strengthened competitors, while increased protectionism began to reduce the number of migrant workers - the core customers of our client. The digital world was looking like a difficult place to operate in.

Our client is a Finnish consulting and engineering company that deals with some of the world's toughest industries. Since 1958, the company has handled the power transmission system for the Swedish National Grid, revamped Salzburg railway station, and has been involved in 90 percent of the world's largest pulp mill designs. The nature of our client's work places unique demands on their IT infrastructure. Many of their projects require them to set up temporary offices in remote locations to deliver their engineering expertise, making seamless connectivity a critical business requirement. Large files, such as complex pipeline drawings, are passed between team members in different locations. Any outage that causes a delay in projects leads to potential financial penalties and damage to reputation.

Experimenting faster is a trait shared by most innovative organizations. They want to experiment with new products and promotions to see if they can unearth bold new ways of serving the customer. But this experimentation cannot be random: it needs to be guided by data and based on current customer insight. It was access to this data that was the problem for our client, a large consumer brand. It took a long time to prepare the data to a point where it could be used by business managers. So long, in fact, that the data was no longer relevant; and the moment as often lost. The company needed to be able to experiment faster but was held back by a cumbersome and ineffective analytics infrastructure.

Our client is a very well-known, long-established bank with over 13 million customers across the globe. Over the years, they had built up a large and complex technological legacy. The landscape included over 1,000 different applications residing on a complex architecture and a hybrid mix of technology, which made testing the non-production environment an increasingly difficult task for quality assurance (QA) teams. Testing environments were fragmented, and this was compounded by a lack of ownership, governance processes, and communication regarding the status of environment readiness; causing delays, extending time to market, and increasing cost.

Every player in the life sciences sector knows it: the future of healthcare delivery lies in digital disruption. Their objective, therefore, is to positively disrupt their own business model before the competition beats them to it. They need to offer a digitally-enabled patient experience that improves clinical outcomes while also bringing benefits to all the other stakeholders, as seen in the hugely complex value chain of our client - a large pharmaceutical company.
