Our Customer Advocacy team have just finalized another customer video with Spanish Partner OmniAccess. The video will be translated in Italian and Spanish. The content is that Omnicasse is using Umbrella to secure connectivity for private yachts and cruise ships in the Mediterranean and beyond. OmniAccess utilizes many capabilities within Umbrella, including the roaming client, the reporting API and Investigate. This is a great one for EMEA and we are looking into getting this translated for Spain.

IBM rarely, if ever publicly, talks about the future of IBM Z. When IBM's sales managers have a oneon-one client conversation (under NDA), they might inform the customer about the next processor, but the company rarely talks about the mid- to long-term future publicly. An obvious reason for this is not to disrupt sales, but at the same time, IBM believes that it is sometimes working on problems that the market might not know it has yet. IBM felt that it was doing a disservice to its current and future customers by not being more open, which is why Tarun Chopra, director, Product Management for IBM Systems, and Ross Mauri, general manager, IBM Z, agreed to talk to IDC about the future of IBM Z. In these conversations, IBM was not putting a date on any of the topics it was willing to discuss. But the company was willing to talk about where it is investing R&D dollars and skills.

This IDC MarketScape includes vendors that create and sell software in the client virtualization space, with a focus on centralized virtual desktops, distributed virtual desktops, and virtual user session (VUS) software. Vendors that only offer user state virtualization and/or software products that support virtual client computing deployments but not one of the aforementioned products will not be included in the IDC MarketScape graphic or profiles. This is because these types of solutions address a specific or niche need in the market but do not, by themselves, provide a complete software solution that an end customer can purchase on a standalone basis or in addition to a Microsoft Server version.

Research carried out with readers of The Register tells us that virtualisation has permeated into the consciousness of the mainstream IT user and buyer community. However, as we move from x86 server to desktop virtualisation we find varying levels of understanding. 'Desktop virtualisation' can be taken to mean client partitioning, 'traditional' Windows Terminal or Citrix-based thin client activity or virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI).

Significant differences exist in uptake of the different flavours of desktop virtualisation, for example in VDI the shared-server approach is more prevalent than 'one server per client'. It is likely that more organisations will seek the economies of scale offered by the shared server approach than those looking at the one server per desktop approach to deliver 'higher performance' desktops. However, there will be situations where centralising the management and other operational elements of a desktop estate by employing a one server per desktop approach are appropriate.
