WebSphere Portal remains IBM's strategic front end for SOA. It enables our clients to closely align their business objectives on standards-based platforms with role-based delivery of composite applications across and beyond their enterprise. At the end of June we delivered a new version of WebSphere Portal Version 6.1. This release significantly improves performance by tapping into the 64-bit capabilities of the IBM System z platform. Cloud computing is a model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction. At the time this definition was published, “cloud” was already part of industry parlance, and was beginning to take root in the general lexicon. Additionally, global business spending for infrastructure and services related to the cloud had topped $78 billion. This year, enterprise spending on the cloud will reach an estimated $174 billion, and is expected to climb to $235 billion by 2017.2 Inevitably, as both business IT and consumer mindsets evolve toward the cloud in coming years, we will continue to witness dramatic growth in IT products in some areas, and significant reductions in other areas—resulting in a reshaping of the industry as a whole.

In recent years, the term “cloud” has appeared seemingly everywhere. But it’s become difficult to understand what precisely someone means when they say “cloud.” The National Institute of Standards and Technology defines cloud computing as a “model for enabling ubiquitous, convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of configurable computing resources (e.g. networks, servers, storage, applications and services) that can be rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction.”

The most problematic scenario engineers encounter when analyzing large deformation solutions using the finite element method is convergence issues due to mesh distortion. This is typical, for example, during simulation of elastomeric sealing or metal forming applications. Complex nonlinearities due to mechanical and/or thermal behavior arise in such cases from inherent material properties, geometric changes and establishment or separation of contact interfaces. The manual rezoning feature which was released in ANSYS 10.0 gave analysts a highly customizable, albeit labor-intensive, workflow to change and repair the mesh whenever needed after an unconverged solution. However, since the release of ANSYS 15.0, the latest “NonLinear ADaptivity” (NLAD) feature and accompanying enhancements are as automatic as one can imagine for repairing mesh distortion, overcoming convergence difficulties, refining the mesh to capture local phenomenon and achieving the “true” design solution.

Historically, the speed of a wired connection at the access edge has always been faster than that of a wireless connection. This means workers had to choose between the performance of wired connectivity and the convenience of a wireless connection. Consequently, workers often had to modify the way they worked— first, finding a wired port to use for high-bandwidth applications, such as video or streaming media, and then shifting to wireless connections when the need to be mobile was more important than having the performance of wired. Today, though, the industry sits on the precipice of the biggest innovation in the history of wireless LAN: the release of 802.11ac Wave 2. Wave 1 of 802.11ac brought network speeds that were 1.3 Gbps (Gigabits per second), which is on par with wired networking speeds. However, 802.11ac Wave 2 shatters the gigabit barrier with speeds of up to 6.8 Gbps.
