Social media marketing ?rm ViralMint rolled out a new feature that proved so popular that the increased customer tra?c swamped the capabilities of the existing load balancer solution and greatly increased application response times. Lacking visibility into the volume or nature of its tra?c, ViralMint had no clues for how to address its issues. A fortuitous conversation led to discovery of the Appcito Cloud Application Front End (CAFE) service, which allowed ViralMint to gain control of its cloud application tra?c, retain its customers trust and build on its unexpected success.

In January 2015, Cisco commissioned Forrester Consulting to conduct a Total Economic Impact (TEI) study and examine the potential return on investment enterprises may realize by deploying Cisco TrustSec. The purpose of this study is to provide readers with a framework to evaluate the potential financial impact of Cisco TrustSec on their organizations. The Cisco TrustSec solution simplifies the provisioning and management of highly secure access to network services and applications. Unlike access control mechanisms that work on network topology, Cisco TrustSec policies use logical grouping. Highly secure access is consistently maintained even as resources are moved in mobile and virtualized networks.

Cisco made Application Policy Infrastructure Controller Enterprise Module (APIC-EM) generally available on November 3rd, 2015. It is an SDN controller that supports apps that make WAN and access networks easier to deploy and manage. Ciscos focus on a low-risk, incremental approach to adopting SDN will appeal to its user-base. Cisco needs to describe the policy control capabilities benefits of APIC-EM, and also highlight its power as a platform and its ability to distinguish apps from point solution offerings from many other companies with competitive features.

Over the past nine years, WAN optimization has transformed from a point-product that solved isolated problems into a strategic cornerstone for application delivery. New acceleration capabilities boost user productivity and satisfaction while reducing time to market. WAN optimization can now be more flexibly integrated into environments to accelerate diverse traffic types, and it includes functionality such as inbound QoS, network performance visibility, and application-intelligent control.

Agile Development and DevOps emphasize quick feedback cycles. But how do we test non-trivial applications with many components? What do we do when some components are outside of our control, expensive to access, or simply not ready to test against? Delaying integration testing or running the tests infrequently is can cause problems to linger, quality to fall, and delivery delays.

New digital technology now makes it feasible to integrate process control and SIF within a common automation infrastructure. While this can provide productivity and asset management benefits, if not done correctly, it can also compromise the safety and security of an industrial operation. Cybersecurity and sabotage vulnerability further accentuate the need for securing the safety instrumented system (SIS). Certainly, a common platform approach using similar hardware and software dedicated for control and safety functions, respectively, can provide the potential for cost savings. However, it is widely acknowledged that utilizing separate, independent, and diverse hardware/software for safety and control is the optimal way to protect against potentially catastrophic common cause and systematic design and application errors. Different vendors offer varied degrees of integration and solutions. The question is: how to provide an integrated control and safety solution with advanced functionality and productivity without compromising safety and security? And, where do users draw the line? A third-party (e.g., TV) certification of the hardware/software systems to IEC 61508 specifications carries significant advantages, but should this be the only criterion? How does a third-party certificate extend to the plants overall assignment of risk reduction credits for all independent protection layers (IPL)? Control system embedded safety logic solvers may actually increase the SIL requirements of the SIF if no credit is allowed for the distributed control system (DCS) as an IPL. In the 1990s, client/server was the predominant architecture used to build business applications. The applications had rich functionality, were responsive, and satisfied users' needs. Client/server worked in a time where the only networks were the ones owned and controlled by the enterprise and the only user base was internal.
