In today's economic reality there is growing pressure to maximize the huge investment put into large scale SoCs (System on Chip). A large portion of this investment is the creation, integration and verification of the SoC, AKA front-end. There are numerous ways of lowering this investment; the most popular one is the creation of derivatives from a master design. The common frontend approach uses a different methodology based on the commonality found in many projects designed using the same basic architecture. By identifying designs that share a common "critical mass" one may design a common integration flow, testbench, DFT (Design For Test) and architecture giving special attention only to the different and not the common.
